Ethnic Diversity:

An ethnic group is a human population whose members identify with each other on the basis of presumed common genealogy and ancestry (Smith 1986). Ethnic groups are usually united by similar cultural, behavioral, linguistic, or religious practices. An ethnic group is also a cultural community. While ethnicity and race are related concepts (Abizadeh 2001), the concept of ethnicity comes about by the idea of social groups that have shared nationality, tribal affiliation, religious faith, language, or cultural and traditional origins and backgrounds; on the other hand race is a commonality of an idea of a biological classification. In the West, ethnicity, similar to race and nation developed primarily because of European colonial expansion. When political parties such as mercantilist and capitalist wanted to uniquely identify a territory to promote the campaign and views for election, they decided to develop clear more defined barriers on each state. In the nineteenth century, modern states generally sought legitimacy through their claim to represent the nation. Nation-states, however, include populations that have been excluded from national life for one reason or another. Members of excluded groups, will either demand inclusion on the basis of equality or seek leave and become separate. These separate parties became groups' people with similarities and eventually developed into a different ethnic party. It is generally human nature to exclude any different from you. To be tolerant is an acquired nature. This gave rise to the beginnings of prejudice and discrimination. Sometimes ethnic groups are subject to prejudicial attitudes and actions by the very nation it represents. Throughout history, many have argued the legitimacy of acknowledging ethnic diversity and the equality of all individuals in this society. One

view is government should not acknowledge ethnic, national or racial identity and should instead force political and legal equality of all individuals. Others argue that not addressing will cause greater autonomy and more ethnicity. The best route to take is to identify and develop a process through which the particular needs of ethnic groups can be accommodated within the boundaries of the nation state. Ethnicity goes far beyond the modern ties of a person to a particular nation, and focuses more upon the connection to a perceived shared past and culture. Some social groups in the United States have historically been subjected to systematic discrimination and continue to experience the negative impact of it. These groups include racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities as well as women and the poor. Also some groups in the US have been and continue to be under represented and under served in academia, and the job market, especially at the most prestigious institutions, both among students and the highest ranks of faculty and staff. Though there are laws to prohibit this it continues to thrive. All organizations must take personal responsibility for the diversity surrounding their environment. In most part rectifying the issue slow and arduous, but progressing. Organizations are spending millions of dollars to combat the problem. To help increase the ethic diversity in higher held positions within a company. Removing unfair human resource practices tying pay to ethnicity or gender. Implementing diversity training for persons in management, and offering seminars and workshops to employees are other ways tackle ethnic diversity problems in organizations. Increasing enrollment of ethnically diverse people in learning institutions is another way. These are some of the tactics being used to resolve this issue.
